Alright...as promised, I want to share some highlights from my time in Malawi and Zambia. I've decided to put this in the form of a top 5 list to help focus on the best stuff. I hope you enjoy!
5. Open-air Evangelism
While out in the village in Malawi, we got to go to surrounding villages from where we were staying and do some evangelism. Basically, we got permission from the chiefs to come into the village and gather as many people as wanted to come, then we sang some choruses with them, introduced ourselves, shared testimonies and preached a message of hope. At the end of each time we would have those who wanted prayer come forward and we laid hands on them and prayed. We did a total of 7 services while we were there and in the places we went, there were very few Christians and sometimes no churches. It was humbling to be part of taking seeds to new ground, where many who listened had never heard of the hope we were sharing.
4. My teammates!
I was extremely blessed on this trip to get to work with three amazing people. We all came into the summer not knowing one another and being very different, but throughout the summer we were able to love one another and work together to accomplish God's purposes for us. We built friendships with one another that I will always cherish! So here's a quick shout out to Team Malawi: Drew, Laney, Amy...Love you guys!
3. Youth Conferences
Much of our time in Malawi was spent at the three youth conferences we did out in the village. We did one girls conference, one boys and one mixed. We had expected only maybe 40 at the first two and ended up with over 70 at each, then we had over 170 at the final conference. The kids ranged from ages 10-19 and were from all the surrounding village churches. They were eager to learn, loved to dance, and showed us what it meant to just have a good time! We taught about being Godly, prayer, faith, how they can serve, and many other topics, but mostly we got to see the joy and hope in their eyes that only comes from Christ.
2. Foundations for Farming Training
We had the chance to go to a village in Zambia, close to the Malawi border, to work with a group of young adults and teach them some of the basics of FfF. The group had been chosen from churches in the surrounding villages because they had shown themselves to be leaders amongst the youth. They came excited to learn and share their thoughts and it was a great time of teaching and listening to their hearts. They also spoke English so we were able to spend some time just chatting and building relationships!
1. Relationship building with the nationals
Throughout our time in Malawi we always had at least two local pastors with us as translators. We got to just live life with them and learn from them and it was an amazing blessing to see the passion they have for their people and the joy they have for serving the Lord. We also spent lots of time with the global youth workers that we partnered with for this trip, the Banda's in Malawi, and Lloyd in Zambia. What prized people they are! We had the privilege of learning from them and they welcomed us in as family!
